Kasimira’s castle

Lady Kasimira, a member of the Wichita chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism, wanted a castle to call her own. However, they are not often found on the real estate market in Kansas. She therefore decided to build a tower in her back yard. Her funds were limited, so she did most of the work herself, even though she was no longer young.

The picture is a cyanotype, a form of photographic print based on iron compounds rather than silver halides. The cyanotype sensitizer is perhaps million times less sensitive than silver emulsions and requires exposures to direct sunlight of from five to twenty minutes to form an image. It’s a contact printing process in which the image is the same size as the negative; I used an old 4x5 press camera to take the picture. One of the attractions of the process is that you can make prints on any suitable surface, not just paper. This particular image is on a piece of silk.
