No melancholy here

I watched the first episode of Lucky Star. The opening is terrific. Why not? Kyoto Animation hasn't done a straight-up comedy since Fumoffu; it's about time they took a break from the usual serious fare.

I have a weakness for fun, pointless shows myself (cf. Azumanga Daioh and Ichigo Mashimaro), so despite the relatively weak first episode I'll be following it.

I just read on someone else's blog that the business about the chocolate roll is a take on the Azu scene where Osaka talks about the right way to eat a taiyuki (one of those fish-shaped pastries).

I suspect that the roll is no more a referece to Azumanga than Manami Amamiya's speech is a reference to Hitler's Beer Hall speech. Sure, the similarity is intriguing, but probably not quite what the creators had in mind.
